President Donald Trump floated a new criminal indictment Monday after accusing former FBI Director Christopher Wray of having committed perjury.
“Wray lied!!!” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social Monday, sharing alongside his remarks another social media post alleging Wray had lied to Congress — and should be indicted.
Wray, who headed the FBI under both the first Trump administration and the Biden administration, testified before Congress in 2021 regarding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot; first in March before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and again in June before the House Oversight Committee.
During his testimony, Wray called the idea that the riot was in some way a part of an FBI operation “ludicrous.” The social media post that Trump shared alongside his remarks, however, characterized Wray’s testimony as having explicitly stated that “he did not place FBI agents in the crowd” of the Jan. 6 rally that ultimately turned to a riot.
Wray has been adversarial towards Trump in the past, having slammed him for his “obstruction” in his agency’s investigation into the president for holding onto classified documents after he left the White House.
Trump has called for several prosecution of his perceived political rivals over social media, including former FBI Director James Comey, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and New York Attorney General Letitia James, among others.
