Archbishop suspended amid accusations of sex misconduct and bullying

Archbishop Stephen Wood, the senior-most official of the Anglican Church in North America, was suspended from his role over allegations of sexual misconduct, according to reports on Monday.

Wood, 62, is a married father of four sons and has been archbishop since June 2024. He faces sexual misconduct allegations from two women, plagiarizing sermons and bullying his staff, and was temporarily removed from his position and duties in an order from Bishop Julian Dobbs, The Washington Post reports.

Dobbs wrote in his order announcing that Wood’s suspension was made in agreement with the church’s most senior bishops and will last “no longer than 60 days” unless the group determines to extend it. Dobbs also writes in the statement that the suspension is not to “determine guilt or innocence.”

“The decision to ‘inhibit’ Wood, as the church calls the disciplinary process, comes as he faces a possible ecclesiastical trial that could lead to his defrocking,” The Post reports.

Wood has denied the allegations against him.
