At least eight people were injured and more than a dozen homes were evacuated on Sunday after a house exploded in the Southern California city of Chino Hills, the authorities said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the house just before 4 p.m. local time and found major damage to the house, the Chino Valley Fire District said in a statement posted to social media.
Four people were taken to the hospital by emergency workers, and four were transported independently, the district said.
Neighbors near Sierra Vista Drive, where the explosion occurred, said their homes were shaking so violently that they thought it was an earthquake. “It shook the whole house,” a woman told ABC 7, a local news station.
Crews stopped a gas leak at the house and were investigating the cause of the explosion, the fire district said.
The conditions of the patients were not available on Monday. Southern California Gas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The city, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, has a population of about 77,000 people.
