Kamala Harris could announce her running mate within days, according to a new report that said she was set to tour battleground states next week with her vice presidential pick.
Vice President Harris stepped into the presidential election last week after President Joe Biden announced he was withdrawing from the race following weeks of growing scrutiny that he wouldn’t be able to perform strongly against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, in the November election.
After dropping out, Biden endorsed his vice president, who raised millions of dollars in donations in less than 24 hours and jumped into action on the campaign trail.
Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee, will campaign in several vital battleground states next week with her running mate, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the planning. She is set to be officially nominated at the Democratic National Convention next month.
Newsweek reached out to Vice President Harris’ campaign via email for comment.
The Reuters report comes as Harris has faced polls revealing that Trump has outperformed her in battleground states, which prove vital in boosting a candidate to victory come November.
Several names have been floated as potential VP picks for Harris, including Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have both said that they are not in the running.
As Harris considers her running mate, Trump is facing criticism regarding his choice of Senator JD Vance, a Republican from Ohio with strong views on abortion and immigration.
Rumors have since arisen that Trump might regret his VP choice, although the former president’s communications director, Steven Cheung, denied reports that Trump was second-guessing Vance in a statement sent to Newsweek last week.
“President Trump is thrilled with the choice he made with Senator Vance, and they are the perfect team to take back the White House. And any reporting to the contrary is nothing but ridiculous fake news from either non-existent sources or individuals who have no idea what’s going on,” Cheung said.
“Meanwhile, Democrats are in complete disarray after their coup that forcibly removed Biden from the campaign, proving they are the real threats to democracy.”
Trump has called Vance “fantastic” and said his choice wouldn’t have changed, even if Harris launched her campaign before he chose his running mate.
