An apparent immigration raid in Oxnard turned unruly Tuesday morning.
Federal agents contacted the Oxnard Police Department just before 6 a.m. to advise that they’d be serving federal search warrants in the 400 block of A Street, Watch Commander Miguel Serrato told KTLA.
The Department of Homeland Security was in the area for several hours, and Serrato did not have any information about potential arrests or injuries.
Aerial footage from Sky5 showed what appeared to be several dozen protesters, many of whom appeared to yell at federal vehicles as they went by.
What appeared to be a smoke grenade, tear gas or something similar was also deployed, aerial footage showed.
In a news release, the U.S. Department of Justice tied the raid to the pursuit of two Oxnard residents who allegedly interfered with the July raids on Glass House farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria.
Virginia Reyes, 32, remains at large, though Isai Carrillo, 31, was arrested Tuesday, officials said.
Both face a charge of conspiracy to impede or injure a federal officer, which carries a sentence of up to five years in federal prison. Carrillo is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon.
Prosecutors say Reyes helped create a roadblock that hemmed in federal agents during that July raid, while Carrillo attacked the agents’ vehicles as they used a dirt route as an alternate route to escape.
“Carrillo and others threw rocks at the government vehicles, causing damage to them, and injuring a federal contract employee,” the release said.
Acting United States Attorney Bill Essayli added in the release that “there is zero tolerance for violence against law enforcement officers.”
“During the summer we warned the public that anyone who engages in any violence will eventually be brought to justice,” he said. “Today we are delivering on that promise and will continue to hold those who violated the law accountable.”
