The overnight transformation of five Labrador puppies after arriving at a rescue center has melted hearts online.
Many Tears Animal Rescue shared an adorable video on social media showing the remarkable difference that a good night’s sleep and a sense of safety can make. Footage shows the five puppies, who are around 5 months old, on their first day at the rescue center, looking incredibly nervous and cowering in the corner.
One of the Labradors was even tucked away in a separate area, hiding by the side of the bed.
That all changed by their second day however, as the puppies looked much happier and more energetic. The dogs, named Twilight, Twoo, Twingo and Tweenie, can be seen rushing over to the staff member and licking her hand, as their tails wagged from side to side in typical Labrador fashion.
The dogs were rescued from a breeder, as the adoption information on the website notes that they’re “a little shut down” and still so nervous.
The rescue center, based in the UK, shared the clip on their TikTok account (@manytearsanimalrescue) on February 18, and it’s left internet users fighting back the tears. In just a matter of days, the video has received more than 175,200 views and over 14,800 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
Newsweek contacted @manytearsanimalrescue via TikTok for comment.
Alongside the footage showing the dogs on day one versus day 2, the caption reads: “What a difference a day makes.”
It certainly helped that the puppies got some food and were well rested by their second day, but that wasn’t all that mattered. Perhaps one of the greatest differences is that “they know they are safe” and they’re receiving plenty of love.
The pups are available for adoption, and the rescue hopes they won’t have to wait long before finding loving families.
While rescue centers and shelters do amazing work for animals, it’s no secret that they can also be stressful places. There’s an abundance of new sounds, smells, and sights for any new animal who winds up being rescued, and that can be overwhelming at first.
All these factors can lead to what’s commonly known as “shelter stress,” whereby the animal’s true personality fails to shine through. The Animal Humane Society explains that they might display new behaviors, or they might not exhibit their usual habits at all.
It’s hard to get a true sense of a dog’s personality in a shelter environment, but there are ways of reducing their stress during that time. Some animals need a day or two to decompress and adjust to their new surroundings, according to the Animal Humane Society. It’s also beneficial to provide them with enrichment activities and plenty of stimulation, such as chew toys and walks.
Shelter animals tend to get less rest than a pet in a home, so they should also receive designated quiet time. This can amount to around an hour each day with the lights off and minimal noise to ensure the animals can rest and relax.
Since the video of the rescue Labradors was shared online, internet users were distraught to see how scared and timid they were initially.
Among the hundreds of comments on the TikTok video, one person wrote: “Heartbreaking seeing them so scared, but lovely to see them after, fab work.”
Another person replied: “Awwww the way they’re sitting protecting each other.”
Another TikTok user added: “What they must have seen/experienced to be so scared.”
While one comment reads: “Want to take them all home and show them love and kindness.”
