Star Wars Outlaws is a game that both embraces the core aesthetics and elements of Star Wars, but throws in a few fun curveballs. Despite its rough launch, with some flaws around stealth and combat especially, Ubisoft has been patching the game and smoothing out these issues, which makes it easier to recommend during its Black Friday sale. Normally $69.99, you can grab Star Wars Outlaws for PS5 and Xbox Series for $39.99 at Amazon, or $49.99 at Best Buy and Walmart.
Instead of your typical Jedi, the game’s protagonist is Kay Vess, a rookie smuggler with a little less swagger than Han Solo, but with more charm, smarts, plus a cute dog-like alien named Nix that rides on her shoulder. As you might expect from a Ubisoft game, there’s a ton of stuff to do in game — stealth missions, races, gambling, space combat, and just hanging out with a cast of alien companions. Star Wars Outlaws really succeeds at the feeling of making you feel like you’re living in Star Wars, and I’m a sucker for that kind of fantasy.
I grew up with the Star Wars movies, and I have to confess a certain level of nostalgia that is soothed upon hearing the familiar beeping of a drone or the engine of a speeder. It’s a big part of the reason why I enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic so much as a MMO — it’s a comforting, slightly guilty pleasure to get to hang out in this setting. Star Wars Outlaws really leans into that, with higher graphical fidelity and more elaborate environments. Kay can go to a space version of a KBBQ restaurant and feed bits of fried beast to Nix, explore swamps, ice planets, and deserts, or break into an Imperial base and hack some computers for credits.
