Wordle was invented by software engineer Josh Wardle.
He created it because his partner loved doing word puzzles, but he decided to release the game to the world at the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
It quickly went viral and gained hundreds of thousands of users worldwide in a matter of weeks. Wordle remains popular three years later and is the most played game on The New York Times Games site.
“Wordle‘s shareability across various social media platforms fosters a sense of belonging and common ground that can transcend cultures and borders,” linguistics expert Noël Wolf told Newsweek. “Friends and family members who live far apart, or even in different countries, can use it to stay connected.”
Wolf also shared some advice on how to ensure an ongoing Wordle winning streak.
“Be strategic with your second guess,” she said. “As hard as it might seem—especially if you have a few correct letters in your first word—using a completely separate set of letters, where possible, will help eliminate more possibilities in fewer guesses.
How to Play Wordle
Players have to uncover a mystery five-letter word by inputting a word and then using a process of elimination to work out the answer.
They’re helped along with a color-tiled system, with green showing the letter does appear in the word, yellow indicates the letter is in the word, but just in the wrong spot, and a gray tile means that letter does not appear at all.
The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll with caution if you want to work it out for yourself.
