“When I was in elementary school, I watched ‘E.T.’ and got inspired,” Jun Minamii, 58, said, explaining that the 1980s film “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” has long influenced her personal style.
On the Sunday in November when we crossed paths in Tokyo near Yoyogi Park, she was wearing an ensemble that channeled different characters in the movie. Her overalls evoked the pair that Elliott is wearing when he introduces the titular alien to his siblings, she said, and her varsity jacket nodded to his older brother’s interest in sports. “Elliott’s brother was doing American football, and I really liked it.”
Now the owner of a bar called Kibo in the Kamiyamacho area of Tokyo, she said that her past jobs included one at an apparel company. “Sometimes I wore a pink heel” back then, she said. “And then I would go home and change into Elliott.”
