‘Jarring’: Stunned reactions pour in after GOP Rep’s ‘wild’ declaration he’s not suicidal

Social media users reacted with shock and concern Friday after Rep. Thomas Massie posted a startling message declaring, “I am not suicidal,” amid an escalating public feud with conservative media figures.

The post – in which Massie referenced his health, vehicle brakes, and swimming ability – quickly drew stunned reactions, including from allies who defended him.

Replying directly to Massie’s X thread on Friday, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote, “These are not the type of public statements that any of us should have to make.”

“But I’ll back this up as his friend,” she added. “Thomas is one of the happiest people I know. He loves his kids and grandkids. He loves his wife. He loves his life. And he loves our country and Kentucky.”

Others reacted with disbelief. Kelly Lynn D’Angelo, a screenwriter and musician, wrote on Bluesky, “absolutely bats— WILD a sitting congressman just posted this. folks, we’re getting closer and closer. don’t stop putting on pressure.”

“Important context,” wrote internet personality and political commentator Leah McElrath on Bluesky, “is Massie and MTG (when she was still in office) have both pushed for release of the Epstein files and occasionally defied Trump on legislation. They have been targeted by Trump accordingly, and MTG has spoken publicly about receiving death threats.”

Publisher and editor Alex Ip of The Xylom suggested Massie may be responding to credible threats.

“I assume Thomas Massie is getting death threats,” he posted on Bluesky. “Every Democrat and every Republican that crosses Trump (eg. Raffensperger) gets them. Only Massie knows how credible they are. However, still jarring to see these half-performative, half-serious statements being issued by a sitting Member of Congress.”

Another Bluesky user, @sarkat wrote simply that they were “intrigued and extremely confused by Thomas Massie.”
