D.C. area school closings, delays and other changes for Monday

Some D.C.-area schools systems have announced closures, delayed starts or other changes for Monday, as the region continues to clean up from a Jan. 25 storm that dumped several inches of snow and ice.

A message on the Montgomery County Public School’s website detailed the district’s issues: “We know we will not have perfect conditions any time soon, but many streets and sidewalks are NOT passable for buses or safe for student walkers. Post-plowing snow piles are creating a safety hazard for our buses, creating poor visibility and blocking access to pass through and turn lanes.

“Many major roadways still have obstructions that have reduced lanes, making safe travel during peak traffic times difficult,” the district said.

School districts consider multiple factors, including road conditions, in deciding whether to change their bell schedules.

Here are announced closings and other schedule changes for Monday:

  • Alexandria City Public Schools: Virtual learning
  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Two-hour delay Monday and Tuesday
  • Arlington County Public Schools: Closed; two-hour delay Tuesday
  • Calvert County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • Charles County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • Culpeper County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • D.C. Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • D.C. public charter schools: Statuses vary, are being tracked here
  • Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed
  • Falls Church City Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • Fauquier County Public Schools: Closed
  • Howard County Public Schools: Two-hour delay Monday and Tuesday
  • Loudoun County Public Schools: Two-hour delay
  • Montgomery County Public Schools: Closed
  • Pr. George’s County Public Schools: Closed; code blue for employees (initially announced a two-hour delay)
  • Prince William County Public Schools: Closed
  • Spotsylvania County Public Schools: Remote learning Monday and Tuesday; 12-month employees to report on time
  • Stafford County Public Schools: Closed

Manassas City Public Schools won’t hold classes because of a previously-scheduled professional development day for employees. Public school districts in Carrolland Frederick(Md.) counties will operate on a normal schedule.

This list will be updated.
