Amtrak is selling a $279 ’Trak Suit. Literally who wants this?

Finally, designer duds for the Northeast Corridor set.

What? Was the world not clamoring for a $279 train-themed two-piece?

Amtrak said last week that its new ’Trak Suit — a “soft, cozy” zip-up hooded sweatshirt, matching pants and sleep mask — was available for sale through Monday.

The blue and white getup is meant to embody the “premium comfort, modern design and elevated experience” of Amtrak’s new highest-speed Acela trains, which launched last year. Because, don’t we all want to dress like modes of transportation?

“All aboard for fashion forward fun!” Amtrak says on its merchandise site.

Judging by the reaction on social media, some consumers were sold — on the look, if not the price tag. A few compared the cost of the ’Track Suit to the price of last-minute train fare.

“Area Twitter user open to followers creating gofundme page to purchase ultimate dad suit,” one person wrote.

In the service of journalism, we tried to break down the who, what, when, where and why of the new athleisure offering.

Why does this exist?

Amtrak is very excited about its NextGen Acela, which launched last summer after years of delays. The foray into fashion was meant to “meet the moment” of transformation at the rail company, Jessica Davidson, Amtrak vice president of digital and brand management, said in an email.

Around the time of the new fleet’s introduction, the operator held a contest in collaboration with the New York School of Design to create an Amtrak-inspired track suit. There was even a fashion show at Moynihan Train Hall during New York Fashion Week. The winner in the ready-to-wear category, designed by Anastasiia Lukinskaia, is now available to buy.

Okay, but why a track suit?

No, ’Trak Suit. Like Amtrak. Get it?

“What do trains and track suits have in common?” the operator asked on its website. “They’re comfortable, convenient and timeless, but they can also feel fresh again if you just use a little imagination.”

What are the details?

The material is “micro-fiber fleece poly fabric,” according to the Amtrak store. The three-lined Amtrak logo appears on the chest and leg, and in the zipper pull. Dark blue and white are the main colors, but there are black and lighter blue accents. The fabric is imported, the page notes.

A detachable sleep mask is built into the hoodie to meet your train sleep needs.

Sizes XS to 3X are available.

Why does it cost so much?

Davidson said the suits are a “limited-release capsule” that are designed and assembled in the United States.

“The price reflects creation and fulfillment costs and the design was crafted with the same artistry and detail you would expect from a fashion brand,” she wrote.

Who is this for?

According to Amtrak: “everyone!”

Per several people on social media, the fit would be perfect for famous train enthusiast President Joe Biden.

Ean Williams, founder and executive director of DC Fashion Week and a fashion designer, said he preferred one of the other styles in the contest.

“The winner is a safe choice for an older demographic, not the younger models featured in the photo,” he said in an email.

Is anyone buying it?

Apparently. Davidson said she could not share exact numbers “for proprietary reasons” but said “we are delighted to have already surpassed our goal for this limited release.”

As of Sunday afternoon, all sizes were available for shoppers to add to their cart online. Despite the speedy-train inspiration, customers should not expect fast fashion: The production lead time is 60 business days.

Is it … cool?

Ashley Fetters Maloy, fashion and culture reporter at The Washington Post, said she was reminded of U.S. Postal Service merch that became extremely popular in 2020 — specifically, a crop top that sold out.

“Listen, athleisure clothes are big and baggy again, so silhouette-wise this is certainly on trend and something I could see a young person wearing,” she said in a message. “That said, I think the best-case scenario is someone exceptionally cool wearing it with a little glint of irony.”

Is Monday really the last day to buy it?

Davidson said the enthusiastic response has prompted Amtrak to evaluate extending the date or adding a second run to the sale.

“If we choose to mass produce these in larger quantities, we may even consider a few different versions of the design at different price points,” she wrote.
