D.C.-area school closings and other changes for Wednesday after winter storm

These D.C.-area schools will remain closed Wednesday after winter storm

Some D.C.-area students will remain out of class again Wednesday as the region slowly tries to clean up after a winter storm.

At least one district, in Alexandria City Public Schools, and some D.C. public charter schools will shift to virtual learning.

The closings come as a brutally long cold snap has made it difficult to clear away the mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that fell across the region on Sunday. While crews have made some progress in clearing major roads, many secondary and neighborhood roads have remained covered.

Road and sidewalk conditions are among the factors school officials consider in deciding whether to cancel or delay classes. Most districts have opted not to shift to virtual learning and instead are using traditional snow days built into the school calendar.

Here is a roundup of closings and other schedule changes Wednesday for major districts in the region:

  • Alexandria City Public Schools: Synchronous virtual classes will be offered; staff to work virtually
