Chrissy Teigen reveals why she quit drinking again after falling off the wagon

Chrissy Teigen revealed she is re-entering her sobriety journey because she “felt like s—t” once she started drinking alcohol again.

The model took to Instagram Tuesday to thank Carl Radke for appearing on her “Self-Conscious” podcastto discuss his own sobriety journey and credited him for “changing [her] life” and perspective on drinking.

“After being sober for a little over a year, I went back to drinking. I promised myself it would be in a ‘mindful’ way,” she began in the caption.

Teigen, 40, admitted that she decided to end her sobriety because she wanted to “be able to have a glass of wine on a date night” with husband John Legend and “toast on birthdays.”

In hindsight, she realized that her mindset was dangerous because she was “tying drinking to reward or like some sort of life prize.”

“Soon it became the kind of drinking I’m all too familiar with. Quiet moments at home were for wine. The time went from 6pm, to 5, to 4, to aw hell, it’s lunch, why not. When it got to 11am, I was like, oh f—k, here we go again.”

Although it wasn’t “the kind of drinking where you slur your words and miss a step on the stairs,” Teigen began to notice the small ways it was affecting her life.

“It was just quiet and consistent. And god, I felt like shit. I missed being able to pick up my keys for a last-minute grocery run. But it wasn’t messy enough yet to stop.”

Teigen said the same week she talked to Radke for her podcast, she was asked to be on Netflix’s “Star Search” — which was her wakeup call to hop back on the wagon again.

“[I] knew that if I were given the incredible chance to be on the show, there was absolutely no f—king way I’d do it with alcohol in my dressing room.”

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model then compared the difference between her first time giving up alcohol to this time around.

“I think the biggest difference between now and the first time is that there’s no pomp around it. The first time I put my foot down, it was EXCITING. The momentum was fun and kept me going on the right track.”

This time, however, Teigen fears that those around her have lost faith in her and she has lost some faith in herself.

“Or maybe no one wants to get too excited. Like an old boyfriend you talked so much s—t about to your friends, then you get back together with them and everyone just stops caring because who knowwwwws what’s gonna happen next.”

That being said, she proudly shared that she is “52 days sober again with no desire to turn back.”

“Turns out, without it, I can still be funny. Still be stupid. Still be wildly nervous. Anxious as a mother fucker. And I can get through it all without it. I love you guys. Thank you for listening!! Enjoy our talk, because it changed my life. No big deal,” she concluded.

In May 2025, the mom of fourvulnerably shared she relapsed on the “f–king beast that is alcohol” and felt bad for letting so many people down as well as herself.

“The truth is, I don’t know what I’m doing. I one hundred percent know I like me better sober. I one hundred percent know I get more done, I absolutely feel better in my body without it,” she wrote via Instagram at the time.

Teigen has been open about her struggles with alcohol since 2017 and revealed that alcohol abuse runs in her family.

She publicly began her sobriety journey in December 2020 because she was “done with making an ass of myself in front of people” and “tired of day drinking and feeling like s–t by 6.”

Teigen has given regular updates on her journey since then, admitting in 2021 to “a few (wine) hiccups in the road.”

In July 2022, Teigen celebrated a full year of continuous sobriety and shared she was feeling “really good.”
