BAFTA Nominations: ‘One Battle After Another’ and ‘Sinners’ Face Off

“One Battle After Another,” which was the most awarded film at this year’s Golden Globes, received the most nominations on Tuesday for this year’s EE BAFTA Film Awards, commonly known as the BAFTAs.

The movie garnered 14 nominations, one more than “Sinners,” and both titles will compete for the best film award, along with “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value.”

The high number of nominations for “One Battle After Another,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s comedic drama about a clandestine organization resisting authoritarianism, and Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie, “Sinners,” echoes this year’s Academy Awards nominations, which were announced last week. “Sinners” secured 16 Oscar nominations — more than for any other film in Academy Award history — and “One Battle After Another” received 13.

The BAFTAs are widely seen as a bellwether for the Oscars because of the overlap in their voting academies. This year’s winners will be announced during a ceremony on Feb. 22 in London, hosted by Alan Cumming — three weeks before the Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles on March 15.

There is likely to be fierce competition for all of the BAFTAs main prizes. Competing for the best director award are Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”), Paul Thomas Anderson (“One Battle After Another”), Chloé Zhao (for “Hamnet,” about Shakespeare’s private life), Joachim Trier (for “Sentimental Value,” a Norwegian family drama) and Josh Safdie (for “Marty Supreme,” which stars Timothée Chalamet as a table tennis ace). Also nominated is Yorgos Lanthimos for “Bugonia,” in which two conspiracy theorists kidnap a company executive, believing her to be an alien.

In the leading actress category, Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”) is competing against Emma Stone (“Bugonia”), Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”), Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blue”) and Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”). Also nominated is Chase Infiniti, a surprise omission from this year’s Academy Award nominees, for her role in “One Battle After Another.”

The leading actor category sees Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”) up against Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”) and Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”). Jesse Plemons is also nominated for “Bugonia” as is Robert Aramayo for “I Swear,” a British movie about a man with Tourette’s syndrome.

Unlike with this year’s Academy Awards, “Wicked: For Good” was not shut out of the BAFTAs. It received two nominations: for costume design, and hair and makeup.

Alex Marshall is a Times reporter covering European culture. He is based in London.
