The Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority appears ready to ditch President Donald Trumpin his fight to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, according to a CNN analyst.
Last year, Trump tried to fire Cook because she would not vote to lower interest rates. The president alleged that Cook’s termination was “for cause” and accused her of mortgage fraud, even though the Department of Justice has not charged her with a crime. Cook challenged her termination, and the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case on Wednesday.
Phil Mattingly, CNN’s chief domestic correspondent, discussed what he heard during the arguments on CNN’s “The Arena” with Kasie Hunt. Mattingly said the courtroom didn’t portend well for the president.
“What was so fascinating about this nearly two-hour argument today is conservative justice after conservative justice in that six-to-three majority, five out of the six laid out very clear skepticism about specific points and made very clear that the Fed is not just considered independent, it is very much, in their view … the bedrock of really the global economy is something that they are very, very keen on upholding here,” Mattingly said.
The justices’ skepticism comes at a time when Trump has upped the ante in his fight against the Federal Reserve. His prosecutor in Washington, D.C., former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, recently subpoenaed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell over statements he made to a Senate committee last summer concerning the Fed’s $2.5 billion headquarters renovation project.
Powell, who was appointed Fed chairman by Trump in 2017, has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of trying to intimidate him.
Powell’s term ends in May 2026.
