Trump admin’s ‘incomprehensible’ decision thrashed in governor’s address

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs thrashed President Donald Trump’s administration during her state of the state address on Monday for its “incomprehensible” decision to deny emergency funding to communities devastated by floods.

Last year, the Globe-Miami region in Arizona was hit by a monsoon that killed three people and left several businesses damaged. Last week, federal emergency management office officials denied the community’s application for emergency relief, saying it was “not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the state and affected local governments,” according to a report by Globe-Miami Times.

Hobbs addressed that decision in her speech.

“Families have had their lives shaken and livelihoods destroyed,” she said. “These are our fellow Arizonans. They are our fellow Americans. And they need our support now more than ever.”

The Trump administration has sought to make states more financially responsible for emergency disaster cleanup during his second administration. In turn, FEMA revised its guidelines to require cities to submit population estimates that exclude people removed from immigration proceedings, which 12 states argued is illegal in a lawsuit filed last November.

“Blood, sweat, and tears went into building these livelihoods,” Hobbs said. “How can our federal government turn its back on Arizonans who are simply trying to get back on their feet?”
