A prominent philosopher shared a shocking prediction about the impact of President Donald Trump’s administration on Sunday in a new Substack essay.
Émile P. Torres, an ethics philosopher, wrote in his Sunstack, “RealTime Technopocalypse,”that the world is facing a crosscurrent of issues that are likely to cause the infamous Doomsday Clock to tick forward another second this year. The clock was created in 1947 to measure civilization’s collective risk of experiencing a doomsday event. It currently stands at 89 seconds to midnight, which is the closest the needle has been.
President Donald Trump has also given analysts at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which manages the Doomsday Clock, reason to set the clock forward, such as divesting America from global climate agreements and creating international instability by kidnapping Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.
“My guess is that the Bulletin will only move the minute hand forward by one second,” Torres wrote. “However, I also wouldn’t be surprised if they chose to push it several seconds closer to midnight. The global predicament of humanity is dire — even worse than during the height of the Cold War, according to the Bulletin. We now face a rapidly growing multiplicity of unprecedented global threats and a deteriorating international security situation, thanks in large part to Donald Trump.”
Torres also shared a shocking prediction for the impact the Trump administration will have after he leaves office.
“I suspect that this is the least crazy the world will be for the rest of our lives, if only because of climate change and all the disastrous sequelae that comes with it,” Torres wrote. “So, buckle up! Things are going to get even bumpier.”
