A Democrat who has served in Congress for more than 60 years will not run for re-election in 2026, according to a new report.
The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is hanging up his Congressional hat. He has served in Congress since 1981, and has spent more than two decades as the second-top Democrat in the House of Representatives.
“I did not want to be one of those members who clearly stayed, outstayed his or her ability to do the job,” said Hoyer.
Hoyer is the third-longest-serving member of Congress, according to The Post. He decided to retire while visiting family for the holidays, and was “feeling content” with his career.
Hoyer’s retirement announcement comes at a time when younger Democratic candidates are winning elections across the country. Recently, Abigail Spanberger, 46, was elected to be the next Governor of Virginia. Former Rep. Mikie Sherill (D-NJ), 53, won the New Jersey governor’s race.
