Venezuelan leader Maduro pleads not guilty at federal arraignment

NEW YORK — Deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, appeared at a Manhattan courthouse where they were arraigned on charges that they enriched themselves through drug trafficking. Maduro and his wife pleaded not guilty. “I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man,” Maduro told U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, using an interpreter. Venezuela’s future — and Washington’s role in it — remains uncertain after Maduro was removed by U.S. forces. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would wield its leverage to pressure the country’s leaders, while President Donald Trump said the United States is “in charge.”
