‘What’re you supposed to think?’ Ex-prosecutor says Trump’s DOJ clearly ‘hiding something’

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said the Justice Department’s handling of records tied to Jeffrey Epstein has only fueled suspicions of a cover-up – and that the agency’s failure to comply with the law in its release of documents only deepens the public’s distrust.

Speaking with Bulwark editor Sam Stein on “The Bulwark Podcast,” Weissmann said Friday the government’s piece-by-piece approach has left critical questions unanswered.

“There’s a million unanswered questions. They have not complied with the law,” Weissmann said. “If you are a conspiracy theorist or if you think that they are just covering up what’s going on, you have a ton of fodder, and they’re continuing to give life to both of those, the conspiracy theory and the cover-up concern, in the way that they’re handling this.”

Using a hypothetical scenario, the former Justice Department official appeared to criticize President Donald Trump on the podcast Friday, arguing that an innocent person would push for full transparency immediately.

“The very first thing you would say is, ‘You know what, get everything out,’” Weissmann said.

“The very first thing you would say is, ‘I want every single document and every single image involving me to be put out as soon as possible,’” he added. “And none of that’s happened. And so, what’re you supposed to think at that point? I mean, there’s only one logical thing you can think, which is that they’re hiding something.”
