President Donald Trumpwas caught in yet another “lie” on Wednesday after he suffered a major setback in court.
On Tuesday, a court ruled that Trump did not establish the necessary conditions to federalize the California National Guard and ordered him to return control to Gov. Gavin Newsom. That ruling followed another defeat at the Supreme Court, which cast significant doubt about the legal theory Trump’s lawyers offered to justify the troop deployments across the country.
Trump responded to the rulings in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, saying that his administration was “withdrawing” the troops, suggesting it was voluntary. He also said the troops may return at a future date if crime rates begin to creep up.
“We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again – Only a question of time!” Trump wrote in the post. “It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???”
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Bluesky called out the president for “lying” about the decision.
“Donald Trump’s lying again,” Pritzker posted on Bluesky. “He lost in court when Illinois stood up against his attempt to militarize American cities with the National Guard. Now Trump is forced to stand down.”
Newsom also weighed in on Trump’s statement.
“About time @realDonaldTrump admitted defeat,” he posted on X. “We’ve said it from day one: the federal takeover of California’s National Guard is illegal.”
Other analysts and observers also chimed in.
Political scientist David Darmofal added that the court’s decision was a big defeat for Trump on one of his administration’s key policy issues.
“Pritzker defeated Trump on the central policy of Trump’s second term,” he posted on Bluesky.
Entrepreneur Spencer Hakiman posted on X that Trump’s court loss was “humiliating.”
