A DJ, a Poet and Politicians Make Up Mamdani’s Inaugural Lineup

Zohran Mamdani’s public inauguration will be sprinkled with performances by musicians, poets and politicians.

As expected, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will deliver opening remarks and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont will administer the oath of office to Mr. Mamdani. Cornelius Eady, an acclaimed poet, will read an original work. But there are some surprises, too.

DJ mOma is already welcoming New Yorkers braving the frigid temperatures, spinning “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers, “Rapture” by Blondie, and selections of Bhangra music, Stevie Wonder and Celia Cruz.

DJ mOma said he wasn’t even supposed to be in New York on Jan. 1, but jumped at the opportunity.

“The bro, Zohran Mamdani, hollered and I’m on my way back to New York to DJ the inauguration tomorrow on Jan. 1,” he posted on Instagram. The Queens artist has supported Mr. Mamdani before, performing at a get out the vote rally in October at Forest Hills Stadium.

When the inauguration begins at 1 p.m., ceremonial officers will do the presentation of colors, and Javier Muñoz, known for his performances in “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” will perform the national anthem.

Mandy Patinkin, a longtime supporter of Mr. Mamdani who said he turned to song to express his optimism, will perform “Somewhere over the Rainbow” with the P.S. 22 Chorus of Staten Island.

Before Mr. Sanders administers the oath of office, Lucy Dacus will perform “Bread and Roses,” a poem and song that has become a rallying cry for labor rights.

Only then will Mr. Mamdani take the oath on the steps of City Hall, using Qurans owned by his grandparents, before delivering his inaugural address.

Then Babbulicious, a Toronto-based artist, will perform “Gaddi Red Challenger,” a song in Punjabi and English. Finally, Bernie Wagenblast, who best known as the voice of the New York City subway, will announce the new mayor.
