Karoline Leavitt Says She’s Expecting Her Second Child

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, announced Friday that she was expecting a baby girl in May. “My husband and I are thrilled to grow our family and can’t wait to watch our son become a big brother,” Ms. Leavitt, 28, wrote on Instagram, sharing an image of herself standing next to a Christmas tree. Ms. Leavitt, who is the youngest person to ever serve as press secretary, is the mother of a 1-year-old boy with her husband, Nicholas Riccio. Her son, also named Nicholas, was born in July 2024 while Ms. Leavitt was working on Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

The White House said Ms. Leavitt would remain in her role as press secretary after the birth of her second child. A White House spokesman, Kush Desai, did not say whether Ms. Leavitt would take any leave.

Ms. Leavitt’s status as a White House press secretary while raising two small children would be unusual. She has credited her husband for helping her find balance.

“He’s fully supportive of me building my success in my career,” Ms. Leavitt told the conservative news commentator Megyn Kelly in an appearance on Ms. Kelly’s podcast early this year. Ms. Leavitt added, “Becoming a mother in the midst of this very chaotic political world that I work in has been the best thing I could ever imagine because it gives you great perspective.”

Ms. Leavitt, who served as press secretary for President Trump’s 2024 campaign, has one of the most visible jobs in the president’s current administration, fielding questions from reporters in the White House briefing room on behalf of a president with an adversarial relationship to the mainstream media.

She frequently posts photos on social media of her son, most recently with a live turkey at the White House in November, in a pumpkin costume in October and on the beach in New Hampshire this summer.

Ms. Leavitt concluded her announcement on Instagram with a nod to her bosses.

“I am also extremely grateful to President Trump and our Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for their support, and for fostering a pro-family environment in the White House. 2026 is going to be a great year,” she wrote.
