A new dad is accused of gunning down his girlfriend in front of their 3-month-old baby — because he was angry she’d stolen from his coin jar to buy booze, according to police.
Alan Michael Mellow, 33, allegedly shot Hannah Lee Blizard, 30, in the head “a couple of times” during a fight in his car Saturday as their newborn was in the backseat outside their apartment in Monett, Missouri, according to police.
The new dad then brought the baby inside their apartment — leaving his partner “bloody and appearing lifeless” next to the vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by People magazine.
When police arrived, Mellow gave himself up after a brief standoff with officers, cops said.
He then blamed the shooting on a fight over coins he believed the new mom stole to buy alcohol.
“He told us [the woman] had a severe alcohol addiction that he was trying to help her with,” police said in the affidavit.
They “were arguing about her alcohol use and the fact she had stolen coins from his coin collection, which he believed she used to purchase alcohol.”
During their fight, the mom told Mellow that she’d called her mother and planned to leave with their child, the accused killer told investigators.
She then took the baby and got into their Nissan, threatening to leave. When she got inside the car, Mellow grabbed his handgun and shot her in the head “a couple of times,” he admitted to cops, according to the affidavit.
She was declared dead at the scene. The child, who was not physically injured, was also taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, cops said.
Mellow is charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and one count of first-degree child endangerment. He is being held in the Barry County Jail without bond.
