At least 5 dead after Mexican navy plane crashes near Galveston, Texas

At least five people were killed Monday when a Mexican navy plane crashed near Galveston, Texas, Mexico’s Navy said in a statement.

The Mexican navy said the plane — a King Air ANX 1209 aircraft that was carrying four military personnel and four civilians — was conducting a medical transport in coordination with the Michou y Mau Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting Mexican children with burn injuries.

One person from the crash remains missing, it said. Two people survived the crash, but their conditions were not immediately known. It was not clear what had caused the crash.

The plane took off from Mérida International Airport in the Yucatán Peninsula and was headed to Galveston’s Scholes International Airport, according to flight data.

The Mexican navy said in an earlier statement that search-and-rescue protocols were activated in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard following the incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the crash had occurred west of the Galveston Causeway. After receiving a call at 3:17 p.m. local time that reported the crash, the Coast Guard deployed a response boat and a helicopter, it said in a news release.

The Michou y Mau Foundation said it wanted to express its “deepest condolences to the families in light of these events.”
