Help Us Report on Sexual Assault During Uber and Lyft Rides

My name is Emily Steel, and I am an investigative business reporter with The New York Times. I have a long track record of conducting sensitive reporting, including award-winning stories on sexual misconduct.

For several months, I have been investigating sexual violence that has taken place during Uber and Lyft rides. My reporting shows this issue is far more pervasive than publicly disclosed.

The companies state that 99.9 percent of their trips are incident-free, but because they operate at an enormous scale, a fraction of a percent translates into thousands of attacks. Behind every statistic is a person whose life may have been profoundly affected.

Now, I need your help. I want to speak with people who have experienced sexual assault or sexual misconduct during an Uber or Lyft ride to gain a deeper, more human understanding of this issue.

I know that sharing such a painful experience can take immense courage. I am committed to handling your story with the utmost care, respect and sensitivity.

I won’t publish any part of your response without following up with you first, verifying your information and hearing back from you. And I won’t share your contact information outside the Times newsroom or use it for any reason other than to get in touch with you.

If you’d like to contact me using tools that can help protect your anonymity, send me a message using these methods.

Emily Steel is an investigative reporter covering business for The Times. She has uncovered sexual misconduct at major companies and recently has focused on the ride-hailing industry.
