At Least 1 Killed as Heavy Rains Bring Floods to Northern California

Heavy rains triggered flash floods in Northern California on Sunday, killing at least one person, officials said.

Mayor Mike Littau of Redding said on social media on Sunday that the floods had killed one person, as parts of Shasta County saw as much as six inches of rain.

Several other counties in Northern California were under a flood warning on Sunday evening, indicating that flooding was occurring or imminent, according to the National Weather Service. Much of Central California was under a flood watch, meaning that flooding was possible, through Friday.

More heavy rain was expected overnight and into the week. Redding, a city of around 94,000 people that sits about 150 miles by road north of Sacramento, the state capital, saw the heaviest rain and flooding in Shasta County on Sunday. Several vehicles were submerged and officials were dispatched to rescue people who were trapped in floods, he said.

Jan Bodine, 56, was sitting on her couch when floodwaters rushed in through a back door in her house in Redding. Within an hour, the water spread to every room, destroying Christmas presents and her clothes, she said. She does not have flood insurance for her house because it is too expensive. “I don’t know what I am going to do,” she said.

Relina Fisher, a 32-year-old ultrasound technician at a local hospital said she left work early on Sunday to get to her home in Redding before the flooding made streets impassable.

But as she arrived home to a flooded garage, she received a call from work asking her to return for an on-call shift.

“I do feel a little trapped. I feel like I abandoned my job,” she said, adding that her hospital will be without an ultrasound technician until the water abates.
