‘Cannot let that happen!’ Mike Johnson warns Trump will be impeached if GOP loses midterms

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) issued a rallying cry Sunday to young conservatives to stop Democrats from taking back the House majority next year in the midterm elections, warning that should the GOP suffer a commanding loss, President Donald Trump could be impeached.

“Everything is on the line in the midterms in 2026, and we have much more to do,” Johnson said, speaking at Turning Point USA’s annual America Fest conference in Phoenix, Arizona. “If we lose the House majority, the radical left as you’ve already heard is going to impeach President Trump, they’re going to create absolute chaos; we cannot let that happen!”

As Trump’s approval continues to sink to historic lows, tumbling down to rates rivaling “the lowest readings from his first term” as recently as last week, so too have Republicans’ prospects for the 2026 midterms.

“The Republican Party is on track to lose the House of Representatives if the wrong track numbers look anything like they do right now,” said CNN’s Harry Enten last week in response to new polling that showed two out of three Americans believed America was on the “wrong track.”

Some Democratic lawmakers have already pushed for Trump to be impeached, including Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who filed articles of impeachment against the president in April. However, with Democrats in the minority in the House, the motion was quickly tabled.

Were Democrats to retake the House majority next year, however, articles of impeachment could very well advance, assuming most or all House Democrats voted in favor of such a measure, depending on how strong a hypothetical Democratic majority might be.
