Multiple people have been shot and a suspect is at large at Brown University, police said Saturday evening. Students remain under lockdown, and campus and city police are responding to the incident.
“Multiple shot in the area of Brown University,” Providence Police said on X. “This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.”
According to a campus alert, shots were reported at the Barus and Holley Engineering building, a popular place for students to study. The school’s final examination period had just started Friday. Several more shots were later reported on Governor Street, where many students live off campus.
Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said his office is monitoring the situation and urged residents to “stay clear of the area and monitor official channels for updates.”
