A former federal prosecutor was taken aback on Wednesday after a federal judge essentially told President Donald Trump to “get your damn hands off” the California National Guard.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco ruled that the Trump administration must end its deployment of federal troops in Los Angeles, ending a months-long standoff between the administration and the state government. The administration claimed they federalized the California National Guard to protect immigration agents from protesters, a claim that Breyer found unconvincing.
Glenn Kirschner, a former deputy U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., discussed the ruling in a new video on his Substack.
“I’m paraphrasing the actual ruling by Judge Breyer, but that’s kinda what he said, ‘Get your hands off of the National Guard and return control to Governor [Gavin] Newsom,’” Kirschner said.
“I love it when they talk like that. Gives me the justice goosebumps,” he continued.
Trump has attempted to deploy the National Guard to several states in an effort to shield his immigration agents from protesters. However, the courts have largely rejected the administration’s underlying premise for the deployments. For instance, a federal judge in Oregon said the Trump administration was fabricating conditions on the ground to justify the deployment.
