Runaway horse ‘Sundance’ dashes down highways near JFK Airport before safe capture: wild footage

A runaway horse was seen dashing down multiple highways near John F. Kennedy International Airport Sunday night, shocking drivers before it was safely captured by Port Authority officers, according to wild footage.

Dumbfounded passersby posted videos on social media of the horse galloping along the JFK Expressway, past motels and even up an exit ramp leading to JFK Airport.

Several drivers moved away from the horse, giving it a wide berth, even as traffic near the airport terminal started to bottleneck, according to the footage.

Officials determined that the equine named Sundance somehow cut across the airport’s property before dashing south onto the Van Wyck Expressway.

Port Authority cops “safely contained and captured the horse” near the entrance of Terminal 1 at JFK Airport at around 6:30 p.m., Gothamist reported.

Sundance was miraculously unscathed during its journey through the outskirts of Queens.

The equine escapee was returned to its home at Curly’s Cowboy Center in Southeast Queens, less than a mile away from the airport, Port Authority and the center’s founder, R.W. “Curly” Hall, confirmed to the outlet.

The team at the equestrian center was feeding the horses and cleaning the stalls after a holiday bash when the truant charger named Sundance “took off” through a gap in a gate that wasn’t properly locked, Hall said.

“It was just a mishap. That’s all,” Hall told the local publication.

Sundance doesn’t belong to Hall, who serves as an overseer and one of many caretakers. The rightful owner was on the scene that evening, the outlet reported.

The Port Authority Police Lieutenants Benevolent Association union wrote that a Lieutenant Calderon used “quick thinking and calm control” to wrangle the horse.

“Unexpected calls demand steady leadership,” the union wrote on Instagram.

“This is what leadership looks like in real time,” it added.

Port Authority didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Three months ago, another runaway horse wreaked havoc in Manhattan.

On Sept. 1, a horse hitched to a buggy in Central Park started running wild after something spooked it. The carriage driver and passengers quickly abandoned ship as the horse went “haywire” and eventually crashed into a parked carriage near Bethesda Fountain.
