Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has declared Donald Trump and Fox News presenters “hypocrites” after the president was seen falling asleep in a cabinet meeting.
Trump had often called out president Joe Biden for seemingly nodding off during public events, dubbing him “Sleepy Joe Biden” on more than one occasion. This has not landed well now that Trump also appears to be falling asleep in meetings, with Kimmel compiling a news package of criticism aimed at Biden for allegedly falling asleep.
Kimmel pointed out there is absolute silence from those who criticised Biden’s age now that Trump is showing the same signs of fatigue as the former president.
The talk show host said Fox News and other supporters were “going into overdrive” to deflect from Trump seemingly falling asleep in cabinet meetings. Referring to a comment made where a doctor compared Donald Trump to Thomas Edison, Kimmel said, “I have a feeling Thomas Edison took his naps when the cameras were off.”
A compilation of Fox News clips, including commentaries of Sean Hannity and Trump himself criticising Biden for “sleeping in public”, was then shared by Kimmel. In one clip, Trump says, “Who would want to sleep in public? He’s sleeping.”
Kimmel then adds, “Wait a minute, it’s almost these people… are hypocrites.” Kimmel’s comment on the hypocrites backing Trump come as a doctor tried to explain away Trump’s 10-minute nap as the president just resting his eyes.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst for Fox News, suggested Trump is actually proving his cognitive endurance and health by napping in meetings. Dr. Siegel compared the 79-year-old president, whose physician touted had “excellent health,” to Thomas Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb.
But it appears Dr. Siegel confused Edison as the inventor of electricity in his defense of Trump’s fatigue, The Daily Beast reported. Dr. Siegel said, “Thomas Edison believed in the 10-minute nap, by the way. We wouldn’t have electricity, right?”
Dr. Siegel went on to suggest Trump was passing cognitive tests “every single day” by being in office. He told Laura Ingraham, “This is a disgrace because we don’t need to see President Trump passing cognitive tests, as you just said he passes one every single day. Every single moment, going in and out of press conferences. I have never seen anything like it, actually.”
Dr. Siegel may say the cognitive tests are not necessary, but a different doctor, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, suggested the MRI scan as a routine health check is “not plausible”.
Dr. Reiner said, “There‘s no chance that this was just sort of routine preventative care. First of all, it‘s not part of routine preventative care… They disclosed that he had a chest scan and an abdominal scan.”
