Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, embarked on his first international trip as pontiff on Thursday, traveling to Turkey to start a six-day tour that will also include Lebanon.
His visit through a region divided by religious differences will be closely scrutinized for signs of where the pope stands on sensitive geopolitical issues.
In the biggest diplomatic test of his papacy, Leo will try to build bridges with Muslim leaders and Orthodox Christian patriarchs. He will also meet President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon as part of his trip.
