At least 55 people were killed when a fire swept through a cluster of high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Some survivors reported that the blaze had spread so quickly they barely had time to escape. Flames could be seen climbing up bamboo construction scaffolding attached to the exterior of the buildings for renovation work, and then jumping across the gaps between the towers.

The blaze was Hong Kong’s deadliest building fire in more than half a century. Here are some images of the disaster.
