Nancy Mace pushes censure vote to strip fellow Republican lawmaker from committees

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is expected to force a vote that could result in committee assignments being removed from a fellow Republican over a range of grievances with him.

According to Axios, Mace decided to move forward with a privileged censure vote against Rep. Cory Mills (R-SC) on Wednesday after Democrats backed off a plan to censure him when an attempt to censure Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.) failed. Some Republicans accused leadership of cutting a “backroom deal” to protect Mills and Plaskett.

Mace was expected to include a wide range of complaints against Mills in her censure measure. He has recently been accused of domestic abuse, stolen valor, and financial misconduct.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) downplayed domestic abuse allegations against Mills after a Florida judge granted his former girlfriend a protective order.

“Talk about something serious instead,” Johnson told reporters in October.

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) have hinted that they could support Mace’s censure resolution.
