As the holidays approach and gift guides multiply across the internet, we’re taking a moment to think about the presents we give and get that nobody could click to buy, that don’t show up on shopping lists: the ones that cost nothing, or close to nothing, at all. A handwritten poem. A mixtape. A map drawn in colored pencil. A chore completed while you were asleep. A broken family heirloom, repaired.
For an upcoming project, Times Opinion invites readers to share the best free, or close to free, gifts they’ve ever received. We’re excited to hear about the presents that are outside of the (gift) box. Those that cost the least are often the ones that we remember the most. These presents are an act of noticing, of time and of love.
