
Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon, who’s led the world’s largest retailer for more than a decade, is retiring in January, the company announced Friday.
John Furner, the president and chief executive of Walmart U.S., will succeed him effective Feb. 1.
McMillon will stay on the board until June and will be an adviser to Furner, 51, through the company’s 2027 fiscal year.

“John Furner is the right leader to guide Walmart into our next chapter of growth and transformation,” Greg Penner, chairman of Walmart, said in a news release. “John’s six-year leadership of our Walmart U.S. business during a time of rapid change, marked by digital acceleration and strong associate engagement, has positioned us for continued success.”
Like McMillon, Furner spent his entire career at Walmart, starting as a store associate and eventually moving up the ranks into executive positions. He took over leading Walmart U.S. in 2019.
