Following the smash hit that was Netflix‘s animated movie KPop Demon Hunters, Rei Ami — the Korean American rapper who lends her musical abilities to the character of Zoey — said she’s “waiting for the call” about a potential sequel.
“I’m waiting for the call, just like you! You’re gonna find out when I do, so we’ll chat then,” she told E! News on the red carpet for Heidi Klum’s Halloween bash, where she dressed up as Zoey from the opening scene of the film.
Speaking to the ubiquity of the project — about a powerhouse K-pop girl group that must defeat a rival boy band of demons intent on taking over the world — especially for children’s Halloween costumes, the musician said, “It’s everywhere, I can’t get a break from it, oh my goodness … And I’m not complaining, please! I wanna see more.”
Ami added that she still hasn’t processed the popularity of the film, which has broken records for both the streamer — becoming the most popular film it’s released — and for its original soundtrack, which has matched records set by such artists as Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles.
“This is a cultural phenomenon. The records, the headlines — it’s absolutely unprecedented. [I’m] so honored and in awe, and I think I’m just truly humbled by the power of music and good art and how it can really, truly — it sounds so cliché — change the world,” she reflected. “That’s exactly what this film and this soundtrack did, and it brought so much hope and light in[to] such a dim, grim world, so I am absolutely honored and privileged to be a part of it.”
Alongside Ami, Audrey Nuna and Ejae provided the vocals for the fictional group Huntr/x. The trio made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live‘s opening episode for Season 51, which also featured Bad Bunny and Doja Cat, where they performed chart-topping hit “Golden.”
