The 2025 PGA Championship offers a possibility never before seen in professional golf: two players completing the career Grand Slam in the same season. It will be Jordan Spieth’s turn to attempt the feat for the ninth time.
Spieth is not among the top favorites to win at Quail Hollow (+6000 on FanDuel), but there is no doubt that his storyline will be one of the most closely watched of the event.
Of course, the fact that Rory McIlroy achieved his long-awaited career Grand Slam by winning the Masters Tournament has fueled the anticipation that Spieth could do the same. Even the three-time Major champion made no secret of how motivating the Northern Irishman’s triumph at Augusta National was for him:
“Obviously watching Rory win after giving it a try for a number of years was inspiring,” Spieth said. “You could tell it was a harder win than — most of the time he makes it look a lot easier. So that obviously was on the forefront of his mind.”
“Something like that has not been done by many people, and there’s a reason why. But I’d love to throw my hat in the ring and give it a chance come the weekend this week.”
Although Spieth has not being playing his best golf in recent seasons, there is no doubt that the career Grand Slam has never been out of his sights:
“For me, if I could only win one tournament for the rest of my life, I’d pick this one for that reason,” he said.
Jordan Spieth had an extraordinary run in major championships between 2015 and 2017, which included three victories (2015 Masters Tournament, 2015 US Open and 2017 Open Championship) and three other top fives. Since then, he has tried to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the PGA Championship, but has been unable to do so.
In fact, Spieth has only finished in the top 10 twice in 12 PGA Championship appearances (10 cuts made). That happened in his stellar 2015 season, when he finished second, and in 2019, when he tied for third.
Spieth has shown signs of returning to form this season after undergoing wrist surgery last summer.
He has missed just one cut in 10 events in 2025, with three top 10s and three other top 20s. His best finish of the year was a tie for fourth at the WM Phoenix Open and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Other notable results of the year include his T14 at the Masters Tournament and his T18 at the RBC Heritage.
