The Boston Red Sox have life. After a slow start to the offseason that saw the Red Sox fall short of acquiring Juan Soto and Max Fried, the team has finally made an offseason splash.
The acquisition comes in the form of a trade, and one that had very little lead-up until the deal was announced.
“The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a trade to acquire left-hander Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox,” reported Jeff Passan of ESPN. “The deal is in the medical phase. Not official, but trending toward it.”
The details of the trade came just a few minutes later as Red Sox fans held their breath to see what the exchange for the left-hander would be. The free agent market this offseason has inflated beyond all expectations, and expectations were that the going rate on the trade market would be the same way.
Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu’s names had both been floated in trade predictions, some even projecting that a trade for Crochet would require to give up multiple big leaguers or several of their top-tier prospects. Fortunately, while the package was notable, Boston was able to keep the big-league roster intact.
“Red Sox acquiring Garrett Crochet from (Chicago) White Sox,” tweeted Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. “For catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez.”
Somehow, the Red Sox managed to trade none of their three prospects that ranked among the top 10 in baseball, and no major leaguers.
Kyle Teel is the primary acquisition from Chicago’s end of the trade. The 22-year-old catcher was selected 14th overall in the 2023 MLB draft and has since ascended to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, where he slashed .255/.374/.343 for an OPS of .717 in 28 games last season.
The trade can only be seen as a win for Boston, who have now acquired a 25-year-old ace with two years of control.
Trade talks surrounded Crochet at the trade deadline last year, with reports saying that Crochet intended to sign an extension with his new team if he was indeed traded. It is unclear at this time if the Red Sox and Crochet agreed to details of an extension prior to the trade, or if there will be an extension at all.
