Pre-recorded in Atlanta, the Saturday Night Live movie—aka Saturday Night—is coming soon to a digital platform near you.
Directed by Jason Reitman, and written by Gil Kenan, this new biographical drama tells the story of the 1975 premiere of the now-renowned live comedy sketch show, created by Lorne Michaels (who is played by Gabriel LaBelle in the movie). The sprawling ensemble sketch show includes Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, Kim Matula as Jane Curtin, Nicholas Braun as Andy Kaufman / Jim Henson, Matthew Rhys as George Carlin, Willem Dafoe as David Tebet, J. K. Simmons as Milton Berle, and so many more.
Saturday Night received mixed reviews—some critics enjoyed the nostalgic trip down memory lane, but others thought the biopic fell short. The movie failed to make a splash at the box office, earning just $9.6 million worldwide. Perhaps the film will find better success with the home market.
But before you buy or rent Saturday Night on digital, you should know that—because it is a Sony movie—Saturday Night will likely be on Netflix very soon. Here’s what to know about Saturday Night digital release, including where to watch Saturday Night on streaming, and when Saturday Night will be on Netflix.
Saturday Night digital release date:
Beginning on Tuesday, November 12 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also Monday, November 11 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time) Saturday Night will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more.
The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $19.99 to rent, and $24.99 to buy. If you rent the movie, you will have a 48-hour window to watch it after you hit “play.”
Saturday Night will also be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 7, 2025. Both the digital and the physical copies of the movie will come with a filmmaker commentary, and a special feature titled “The Making of The Movie of The Show That Almost Never Made It.”
How to watch the Saturday Night Live movie on streaming:
Saturday Night is not currently streaming free on any of the subscription-based streaming services. However, if you don’t want to pay to buy or rent the movie, we do expect to see Saturday Night streaming on Netflix in the near future.
When will Saturday Night be streaming on Netflix?
Saturday Night will likely be on Netflix in the new year. Netflix has a deal with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. Other recent Sony movies, including Harold and the Purple Crayon and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, came to Netflix about four months after opening in theaters.
If Saturday Night follows this same release pattern, you can expect Saturday Night to stream on Netflix around late January or early February 2025, aka four months after the movie opened in theaters in late September.
In the meantime, you can watch the Saturday Night movie online by buying or renting the movie on digital platforms.
