After spending the last several months sticking his foot in his mouth, smearing Haitian immigrants, and giving off the most uncomfortable of vibes when attempting to interact with his fellow Americans, JD Vance did a mostly successful impression of a human during Tuesday night‘s vice presidential debate versus Tim Walz. Of course, that was because the bar was basically set as low as bars can go, and the Ohio Senator didn’t use phrases like “post menopausal women” or yell “they’re eating the dogs” to the moderators. But that doesn‘t mean Vance didn’t have a number of extremely disturbing things to say about how he and Donald Trump plan to run the country, while also making it clear that if they don’t win in November, the duo will not go quietly.
For one thing, the VP hopeful refused to answer a question about breaking up families through deportation when asked by moderator Margaret Brennan “Would you deport parents who have entered the US illegally, and separate them from any of their children who were born on US soil?”

Asked a second time, Vance again declined to take the opportunity to confirm he and Trump do not plan to separate families, including those with children who are citizens:

When the topic moved to abortion, the Republican Senator blatantly lied about his previous comments, claiming he “never supported a national ban.” But, in fact, Vance did just that, saying in 2022: “I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally.” At the same time, he stated on his campaign website that he was “100 percent pro-life” and that he was in favor of “eliminating abortion”; as CNN notes, “these words remained on his website until Trump selected him as his running mate in July.”

Perhaps some of Vance’s most outrageous remarks of the debate came when the topic of January 6 and Donald Trump being a threat to democracy came up. That’s when the would-be VP—who only got the nod for the job in the first place because the last guy in his position was nearly killed doing it—declared that Trump “said that on January 6, the protesters ought to protest peacefully. And on January 20, what happened? Joe Biden became the president, Donald Trump left the White House,” conveniently failing to mention everything that happened in between.

And then Vance doubled down on that version of events! “Look, Tim,” he told his opponent, “first of all, it’s really rich for Democratic leaders to say that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully gave over power on January 20 as we have done for 250 years in this country.” Again, he made no mention of the attack on the Capitol building or the numerous people that died as a result.

“That‘s a damning non-answer,” Walz replied.
