Adolescent boys are struggling with high rates of loneliness and depression. In this audio essay, the author Ruth Whippman argues that young men are stuck between toxic masculinity coming from the right and messages from the left that they should take a back seat. Whippman says that after interviewing over 50 boys, she found that even if our impulse is to shut down some of their ideas, what they need is our curiosity and engagement.
