The Dallas Cowboys continue to be at odds with star quarterback Dak Prescott as the two sides negotiate a new contract. Prescott is playing in the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent in 2025 if the team does not re-sign him.

Prescott has all the leverage in this situation considering he can walk away if Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones does not offer him a proper contract. Prescott even commented on the situation recently at training camp stating, “The money is out there.”
The Cowboys did little to nothing in terms of signing big names during free agency, which has a lot to do with the stars on the roster currently needing new contracts. A deal with Prescott should be more important than all of them.
Jones and the front office did bring back running back Ezekiel Elliott, who will reunite with Prescott to help the offense be even more dynamic in 2024.
Elliott was asked about the contract issues via Todd Archer of ESPN between the Cowboys and Prescott, and how he believes his quarterback will deal with potentially playing for a new team in 2025.
Via Archer, Elliott said, “I think a guy like Dak, who’s been through so much adversity in his life, every time [he has] stepped up to the plate and answered the call. I don’t think it will affect him at all. He’s such a strong person mentally. … Honestly it might bring the best out of him, which I know Dak is going to give us his best anyway, but you get what I’m saying.”
Elliott is correct on one thing: Prescott is going to give his best no matter what. He knows very well what it would mean to play at a high level during what would be a contract year for another team. Prescott continually puts up some of the best stats in the NFL for quarterbacks every season, but the potential of not getting a new contract from the Cowboys could motivate him that much more.

Jones has held strong on his “wait and see” type of negotiations, and that style is already coming back to haunt him. Prescott is already contemplating the idea of playing for a new team in 2025 and star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has not reported to training camp seeking a contract of his own.
Jones needs to make some moves soon, otherwise, he could lose two of the most important players the Cowboys have on the roster.
