When Mandy Moore graced Vanity Fair’s “It’s Totally Raining Teens!” cover alongside fellow Young Hollywood stars like Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes in 2003, she owned “no joke, probably 25” Juicy Couture outfits and preferred Britney Spears over Christina Aguilera. More than 20 years later, Moore recalls that there was actually “a lot of drama” on the set between some of the cover’s leading ladies.
“A lot of teenage drama for sure,” she said recently on influencer Valeria Lipovetsky’s podcast. “There was a fight over a boy I wanna say between two people, I don’t even remember who. I remember feeling like a real outlier and outsider like, ‘I am not a part of the cool kids club.’”
Back in the early aughts, Moore was asked to name her celebrity crush. Instead, she answered “I have a boyfriend,” and listed tennis as her favorite sport. That may have had something to do with said boyfriend at the time, tennis pro Andy Roddick. While on the podcast, Moore shared that “one of the Olsen twins” had a crush on Roddick at the time, adding, “I just remember feeling really cool about that.”
The actor has remained close friends with one of the cover’s other stars, Hilary Duff. “We laugh about that all the time,” said Moore. “We were such babies then, and to think fast-forward 20 years from now… our husbands are best friends. She’s a very, very dear friend to me.” She continued, “One day we’ll be able to show our kids like, ‘Isn’t this so funny? We knew each other back then, and now look at us.”
Duff similarly reflected on the cover during VF’s lie detector interview in March 2022. “I remember being like, ‘This is cool I was included in this,’” she said, but ultimately recalled the experience as “a very high stress, anxiety-inducing day.” But “Mandy and I are great friends now,” Duff added, “so this is very funny.”
