Sky Mavis is behind the successful Axie Infinity blockchain game with $4 billion in trading volume to date. It has cut a number of deals to bring more Web3 games to Ronin, and now it is announcing a partnership with Singapore-based Foonie Magus to launch Apeiron, a blockchain-based god game.
Apeiron has a blend of rogue-lite card-battler and god simulation gameplay. Players immerse themselves in commanding godly avatars to defend their planet’s adorable inhabitants, the Doods, while shaping worlds with extraordinary miracles. Amidst this, they engage in card-based combat against the forces of the Mad God Chaos.
What distinguishes Apeiron is its tri-token system, empowering players with strategic choices that have tangible economic consequences. This system allows trading and investment within the game’s world. Notably, players can breed their Planet non-fungible tokens (NFTs), leveraging mechanics akin to Axie Infinity, facilitating an accessible onboarding process.
Apeiron was initially on Polygon starting in April 2022 for its first NFT mint (Our Planet NFT). But now it is moving off of Polygon.
“Sky Mavis is on a mission to become the best place to build and grow web3 games. We are excited to introduce the first blockchain-based god game to our ecosystem which features new gameplay never seen before in both web2 or web3,” said Sky Mavis CEO Trung Nguyen, in a statement. “The leadership team at Foonie Magus has shipped over 140 titles and has decades worth of deep involvement in both web2 and web3 gaming. I believe Apeiron, with its strong IP and similar play style to Axie Infinity, is a natural evolution for the existing Ronin community.”
The game’s demo is currently available for download on the Epic Game Store, with the global mobile game launch, including a new PvP mode and token launch, anticipated early in the first quarter of 2024.
“In our search for a blockchain that prioritizes gaming and dedicated support to select projects, Ronin rose to the top,” said Frank Cheng, CEO of Foonie Magus, in a statement. “Sky Mavis has demonstrated a deep understanding of the requirements of on-chain game developers, and this shared emphasis on development positioned us as a powerful, synergistic team right from the start. Through this partnership, we aspire to create an ecosystem that harmonizes creativity, engagement, economic value, and IP success, setting a new benchmark in the gaming industry.”
In March 2023, Sky Mavis opened Ronin to select game studios and projects to develop successful Web3 games across various genres. Ronin, known for its active Web3 gaming ecosystem based on wallet activity, has seen a 300% surge in daily active addresses in the past month, Sky Mavis said. Sky Mavis has Sky Mavis has 270 employees.
Apeiron will feature a unique roguelite dungeon card-battler combined with god game simulation gameplay inspired by classic god games like Populous and Black & White. Apeiron is being developed by a team of 60 Hong Kong developers with their prototype generating one of the largest single game seed fundings in Web3 from investors including Hashed, IVC, DeFiance, Ken Cron and CH Kim.
