A man in California is charged with five murders after an investigation into a fisherman’s discovery of the remains of a baby.

The Yolo County’s Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that Paul Allen Perez had been charged with mass murder of his five infant children.

“This case revealed unspeakable evil,” said Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez. “In my 40 years in law enforcement, I cannot think of a case more disturbing than this one.”

Perez was about to be released from the Delano state prison over an unrelated case when he was arrested on suspicion of murdering five of his babies over several years.

In 2007, a fisherman found the remains of a baby in a waterway in Yolo County and went to the police. It took 12 years to identify the child as belonging to Paul Allen Perez.

“So in October of 2019, the infant was identified through DNA as Nikko Lee Perez by a DNA comparison,” said Yolo County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Matt Wirick.

Investigators found that the baby had been born in Fresno in 1996 and had four other siblings. One of the siblings, Kato Allen Perez, was born in 1992 and is known to be deceased as well.

The remains of the other three babies are being sought by the FBI. Investigators said the victims were born between 1992 and 2001, and they were all under six months old when they were allegedly killed.

Police said that the babies were killed through torture and “lying in wait.”

Perez was charged in 2020 with five felony murders and several criminal enhancements. He pled not guilty to the charges.

“The nature of this crime is absolutely heartbreaking and deeply troubling, and as you know, the law enforcement community struggles with cases involving children,” said Wirick.

Lopez added that the investigation is continuing.

Perez is scheduled to appear in court in January.
