The Apple Watch worn by the retired police chief who was fatally mowed down while cycling in Las Vegas alerted authorities to the emergency — playing an alarming automated message as panic could be heard in the background, according to newly released audio of the 911 call.
Emergency dispatchers were contacted by the smart watch when Andreas Probst, 64, was knocked off his bike on Aug. 14 after two teens allegedly plowed into him as he pedaled on the side of the road. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital and two teens have since been arrested for allegedly striking him intentionally.
“The owner of this Apple Watch has taken a hard fall and is not responding to their watch,” the automated message states, according to the audio footage obtained by TMZ.
The watch then gave Probst’s location and noted the message would repeat again in five seconds.
As the message continued to play on a loop, shocked bystanders were heard in the background, according to the audio.
One man could be heard in the background saying he saw a guy fly off his bike while the car kept going.
“He’s breathing, he’s breathing, don’t touch him” a woman can be heard yelling to others as a man apparently told the cyclist not to move.
The stomach-turning moment when Probst was fatally hit was caught on video. It shows the cyclist flip into the windshield before landing on the side of the road.
The driver can be heard asking his giggling friend, “Ready?” as he sped up directly behind the retired cop.
“Yeah, hit his ass,” the passenger told the driver before the car drove into the retiree in the now-viral video.
The alleged driver, Jesus Ayala, who was 17 during the incident, and alleged passenger, Jzamir Keys, have been charged with murder and other criminal counts. Both are being tried as adults.
Their booking photos were released Monday.
Ayala, now 18, and Keys, were allegedly part of a crime spree that included trying to harm another cyclist before hitting Probst, KLAS previously reported, citing both sources and public records.
The other cyclist, 72, that was allegedly hit told emergency dispatch “this car just ran me over on my bicycle,” according to the audio obtained by TMZ.
“He got behind me, I was watching him in my rearview mirror on my bicycle and I’m going ‘oh s—t.’ I got as far to the right up against the curb as I could,” the victim said, noting the driver kept honking his horn behind him. “He did it on purpose … he could have killed me.”
Probst had moved to Sin City after he retired as chief of police in Bell, California, in 2009.
“Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that the lives of others matter,” his daughter Taylor said, calling her father a “man of honor and integrity.”
