Two-time Oscar award-winning actress Sophia Loren has been hospitalized with various fractures after falling in the bathroom of her home in Switzerland, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The outlet reported that the 89-year-old Italian actress (who celebrated a recent birthday on Sept. 20) underwent emergency surgery on Sunday (Sept. 25) after incurring several fractures to her hip and one to her femur.
A source close to the Marriage Italian Style star told THR that there is “cautious optimism” surrounding the operation’s outcome, and that Loren will undergo a short recovery period, followed by a long rehabilitation.
Sources also shared that her sons Carlo Ponti, 54, and Edoardo Ponti, 50, are by her side in the hospital.
According to People, Loren’s Italian restaurant chain shared the news to their Instagram page. The English translation of the caption provided by the outlet, which was originally written in Italian, reads as follows:
“A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.”
The caption continued, “Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.”
THR reported that Loren was set to open the fourth restaurant under her name on Tuesday (Sept. 26) in the southern Italian city of Bari. Her plans of receiving honorary citizenship from the city and other engagements have reportedly been canceled for the foreseeable future.
The 2021 documentary short about the star’s impact, titled What Would Sophia Loren Do?, is now streaming on Netflix.
